Xylene Degradation

Description: The degradation of xylene can have three slightly different pathways depending on if one of the methyl groups is in the ortho, meta or para position on the molecule, but the pathways still have similar enzymes each step. The first step involves xylene reacting with a monooxygenase to form a methylbenzyl alcohol. The next step the enzyme which is used is a methylbenzyl alcohol dehydrogenase that forms a methylbenzaldehyde. The last step is a toluene dehydrogenase converting the methylbenzaldehyde into a toluene.
